Now, I’m sure many people have heard of Oktoberfest and associate it with Germany. To give a little background, the original Oktoberfest is in Munich and doesn’t actually occur in October, but at the end of September. I had the opportunity to go to another large “fest” in Stuggart for the opening weekend called Volksfest. Let me tell you, I had a great time!
I honestly thought it was going to be a sh*t show, with all the drunk people standing on tables, but it was far from it. When the Germans get together in such a fashion, it’s just smiles and good vibes. There was a live band, dancing and jumping on tables (which were bolted to the ground thankfully), good food and drink. I got to taste my first Radler, which is a combination of lemonade and beer, and it was delicious! The alcohol content is very low at around 2.5%. There is also alcohol free beer for anyone practicing a sober lifestyle, not to mention vegan/vegetarian options for snacks/dinner.
If attending one of these fests is in your future, here are my top 5 tips to guarantee an awesome experience.
1. Dress in the traditional attire and you’ll fit right in. You can choose from a Dirndl or Lederhosen. Below are some examples. They come in varying styles and colors so there’s definitely something for everyone.

2. Purchase tickets in advance. You receive meal and drink coupons with values toward purchase of food and beverages once you’ve arrived in your tent at your assigned table. There are typically several tents to choose from when purchasing tickets. You will also receive a wristband that will allow you to enter and exit as needed throughout the day or evening, depending on when you go. Also, there are strict time windows for the day vs. night event so note, they will kick you out once it’s over.
3. Bring cash!
4. Take public transportation. It is very easy to use and is the best way to get to and from these events, whichever city you go to. And note, there will be a lot of walking and dancing so make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes.
You can also just attend the fair and enjoy the rides and games if the tent scene isn’t up your alley

5. If you do opt for the tent experience it is a ton of fun! Keep in mind that it is one big party, so be patient, be kind and above all be present!
Dancing on the tables!

Next year I’m going to go to Munich for the real deal. Let me know if I’ll see you there. Prost!
